Whelan outrighted to minor leagues

kevin-whelanYankees minor league righty, Kevin Whelan, was designated for assignment last week when they made the Hiroki Kuroda signing official, but he made it through waivers and he has been assigned to Triple-A, according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Whelan, who is the last remaining piece of the Gary Sheffield-to-the-Tigers trade, had a good year in Triple-A last season, but at 27 he was older than most of his competition. He seems destined to be a tweener at this point, but he could be called up if injuries force the Yankees to dip into the minors for relievers this season.
