Yankees Rumors: Ibanez and Chavez both talking $1M deals

Now that the A.J. Burnett deal is official the Yankees have turned their attention toward Raul Ibanez. According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, they have the framework done for a $1 million deal plus incentives in place for a while now, but have held off until they could be sure they weren’t getting a DH back for Burnett.

Sherman also reported that Eric Chavez has made it clear he wants to return and the team wants him back. Talk is that they are discussing a deal worth around $1 million plus incentives. Any Chavez deal will probably take place after Ibanez, or another DH is in the mix.

Yesterday Sherman tweeted that the Yankees were only budgeting enough for one of the two, Ibanez and Chavez, and that they wouldn’t necessarily sign both. He also tweeted that the Yankees execs plan on meeting again to discuss signing both.

As far as Johnny Damon, it appears that he will not be coming back to the Bronx. Damon told Sherman and George King of the NY Post, “We both are looking at other options now.”

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported that Damon is still looking for a $5 million deal. That explains everything right there.

  1. Mike Sommer says:

Ibanez now signed, pending physical. $1.1 MM.

  2. Bronx_Knight says:

I'm not crazy about the Ibanez signing, though I understand why the Yankees are doing it. Ibanez made $12 million last year, so I think his willingness to play for $1 million says something about his desire to play for a winning team. I'll take that as a good sign. (As opposed to Johnny Damon, who apparently is insisting on $5 million.)

If they are relying on Chavez to spell A-Rod at third, I hope Chavez can stay healthy. Otherwise we'll be watching Nunez throw balls into the stands behind first base all season.

    Anyway, Go Yanks!!
