DePaula had trouble securing a visa after serving a one-year suspension because he lied about his age and US Customs doesn’t take to kindly to that.
Still just 20 years old, DePaula lost some development time while waiting for that visa, but he’s otherwise a stellar prospect. Many are saying he’s a top 10 guy as soon as he steps foot on US soil. I’m going to hold my judgment until I see what he can do here.
Anyway, I have an article about him that I wrote a month or so ago for my old blog that I’ll re-post here since it’s relevant today. Suffice it to say that he’s got some crazy good tools, and scouting reports indicate already plus control. He could start anywhere from the GCL to Tampa, so it will be interesting to see which direction management chooses to go there.
Kevin Goldstein of ESPN and Baseball Prospectus said that DePaula would rank No. 9 in his version of the Yankees top prospects list.
