Scranton Yankees become the Empire State Yankees

While the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton Yankees, have their stadium renovated they will be using a series of stadiums mostly around upstate New York as their home stadium in 2012.

Since they are temporarily nomadic they have changed their name to the Empire State Yankees for next season, the Rochester Red Wings announced Wednesday.

“With so many games to be played in upstate New York this season we wanted to make the club feel even more at home this year,” Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason said. “We approached the New York Yankees with a few suggestions and they actually came up with the Empire State Yankees moniker.”

Of course it can’t hurt that there will be extra merchandising involved in the name change. Still, it’s kind of a cool name. They are expected to go back to being the Scranton Yankees next year.
