Yankees option Phelps, Mitchell, Kontos, and Laird to the minors

The Yankees first round of spring training cuts was a much larger group, but the four they cut today are much more significant.

Pitchers David Phelps, D.J. Mitchell, and George Kontos were optioned to Triple-A along with infielder Brandon Laird, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News.

All four of those guys were fighting for a spot on the major league roster, although with only one, maybe two, spots open it was going to be hard for any of them to make it. I thought Phelps had the best chance to make it as a long-man out of the pen or maybe Kontos.

Mitchell is probably just behind those two pitchers as far as when he’ll be called up. Laird is blocked pretty well though by Eric Chavez and Bill Hall. He’s going to have to go down and prove that he’s not just a Triple-A player this year by having a big year.

It is possible that all four could play in the Bronx at some point this season.
