Yankees spring training injury roundup: 3/15

You’ve heard about Freddy Garcia taking a comebacker yesterday and his negative x-rays, but he is hardly the only Yankee in camp that is dealing with injuries.

SWISHER’S STIFF GROIN: Outfielder Nick Swisher left yesterday’s game with groin tightness. After the game he looked to be without pain and it is likely the Yankees only pulled him as a precaution. He’ll have Thursday off though (Chad Jennings).

ANY DAY FOR D-ROBDavid Robertson went jogging on a tredmill for 30 minutes yesterday with no soreness and could throw a bullpen this weekend (Jennings again).

JOBA STARTS SPINNING FRIDAY: Joba Chamberlain isn’t a DJ, but he is coming back from Tommy John Surgery and is expected to throw sliders off a mound for the first time on Friday (Jennings).

KONTOS WORKING ON THE WEEKEND: George Kontos has been out with a strained oblique, but he is set to throw a bullpen Thursday and pitch in a game Saturday or Sunday (Jennings again).

BRANYAN’S NOT BACK: Russell Branyan has been out with a back injury and it appears it will be a couple more days for him as there hasn’t been an update since last Saturday.

GOING SLOW WITH ROMINE: Austin Romine said he is feeling no pain in his back anymore, but the Yankees are taking it easy with him as it is not his first injury of this kind. He should be back within a week though (Jennings).

BAD NEWS FOR BURAWA: Joe Girardi said he was impressed by reliever Dan Burawa in camp, but he tore his oblique and could end up missing a significant amount of time (Jennings again).

NO NEWS ON DELCARMEN: Like Branyan, there hasn’t been an update on Manny Delcarmen since Saturday. Last we heard he had started playing catch.

It all seems like a lot, but it’s really not too bad. It’s really mostly guys that were on the fringe of making the roster anyway. Delcarmen and Kontos especially and Branyan too. The guys that have spots only have minor injuries.

  1. I forgot Eduardo Nunez. Anyway, he's still out with a sore hand after getting hit with a pitch the other day. They tried to get him into a game the other day, but at the last minute scratched that idea. It'll probably be another 1-2 days and they'll re-evaluate him. I still expect him to be on the Opening Day roster.
