BBDP April 13th: Tyler Austin continues to mash

Triple-A Empire State: W 7-5 vs Buffalo. W: Whitley (1-0), S: Whelan (1)

Kevin Russo: 1/6, R, 2B (.280)
Ramiro Pena: 1/5, R, 2B, RBI (.192)
Dewayne Wise: 4/5, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, K (.529). That’s right, he’s batting .529 in 17 at bats. Small sample size, but boy is that ever impressive
Brandon Laird: 0/3, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K (.194). Does seem like he’s being more patient this season. Had his 5th error today! 5th! So much for his International League gold glove last season.
Colin Curtis: 1/4, 2B, RBI, BB (.231). Nothing can compare to the 5 walks he got yesterday, which by the way was a club record.
DJ “Mitchuation” Mitchell: 4 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, HR (4.00 ERA). The 3 walks were very uncharacteristic of him, and it definitely hurt him in the results.
Chase “Whiffley” Whitley: 4 IP, H, 3 K (0.00 ERA). Still living up to his nickname, looking great in his first appearance in Double-A. 4 IP in his first appearance at a new level is just downright impressive.
Kevin Whelan: 1 IP, 2 H, ER, 2 K (2.25). Got his first save of the season.

Double-A Trenton: L 1-2 vs Akron. L: Claiborne

Abe Almonte: 1/4, K (.233)
Ronnier Mustelier: 0/4, K (.296). He’s allowed a bad day every now and then.
Zoilo Almonte: 0/3, R, BB, 3 K (.321). Seems like he either strikes out every at bat, or gets 3 hits.
Cody Johnson: 1/4, K (.350)
Melky Mesa: 0/2, 2 BB (.192)
Walt Ibarra: 2/3 (.333) He is starting to prove he can handle Double-A pitching. Hopefully he flashes some of the power and speed he did last year.
Preston Claiborne: 2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, BB, 3 K (3.00 ERA). Got the loss.
Ryan Flannery: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 K (1.8 ERA). Getting the hang of it at a new level, hopefully.

High-A Tampa: L 4-8 vs Daytona. L: Ramirez
Eddy Sosa: 0/4, R, BB (.194)
Kelvin Castro: 1/4, RBI, BB, K (.242)
JR Murphy: 0/4, BB, 2 K (.269)
Kyle Roller: 2/3, RBI, 2 BB, CS (.226). 4 for his last 7 with 2 BB.
Rob Segedin: 1/4, K, SB (1), (.313)
Jose Mojica: 1/3, 2 R, 2B, BB, K, SB (1) (.318)
Jose Ramirez: 4.1 IP, 11 H, 7 ER, 3 BB, K, HR (9.9 ERA). He’s been extremely hittable in both of his first starts. Maybe it was premature to raise him up in my prospect rankings simply because of his velo increase at instructs. Lesson learned.
Vidal Nuno: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K (3.18 ERA)
Branden Pinder: 2 IP, R, 0 ER, BB, 2 K (4.5 ERA). Looked much better today than his last outing. Good rebound.
Manuel Barreda: 1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, K (12.00 ERA). That’s two solid outings in a row.

Low-A Charleston: L 4-9 to Rome. L: Mitchell
Mason “Mad Mase” Williams: 2/5, R, SB (5) (.294). Those 5 SB are impressive thus far.
Cito “Cheeto” Culver: 3/5, RBI, SB (1) (.148). He needed a day like this, now let’s see a breakout Cito!
Dante Bichette Jr.: 0/4, R, BB (.303). Kevin Newman watched one of their games, and was raving about Bichette’s plate approach.
Tyer Austin: 2/5, 2 R, 2B, 3B, 3 K (.333). He either struck out or roped the ball today, but I think this is the beginning of one of Ty Austin’s tears.
Gary “Sanchize” Sanchez: 2/5, RBI, 2 K (.320). Getting hits every time out it seems. Yesterday was a day off for him.
Ben Gamel: 1/4 (.231)
Angelo Gumbs: 1/3, BB, K (.217). Kevin Newman was raving about his patience at the plate.
Anderson Feliz: 0/3, (.333)
Bryan Mitchell: 2 IP, H, 2 ER, 6 BB, K (2.25). I don’t know what it is about those 6 walks, but all of our top prospects have been reaching that milestone lately. Hopefully we don’t see this side of Mitchell too often this season, because it was too frequent of an occurrence last season. He picked up the loss.
Daniel Mahoney: 2 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 4 BB (9.00 ERA)
Zach Varce: 2 IP, 2 H, BB, 3 K (2.25 ERA). Looked sharp today.
Ben Paullus: 2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K (6.0 ERA). Every pitcher with the exception of Rome’s two relievers struggled with control. Maybe it was weather related.
