BBDP Update: Turley strikes out nine in first appearance of 2012.

Bronx Baseball Daily Prospects (BBDP) updates will report on the daily statistics of the minor league players. I will present the statistics and some analysis on a few prospects at every level. This is the first such update, and there will hopefully be many, many more.

There wasn’t much to write home about on the first day of the minor league season. Mason Williams hit a triple in his first full-season baseball game, but then the game was suspended due to weather. Nik Turley takes home the BBD MVP of the day though with his nine strikeouts in just five innings. He didn’t get the win.

Triple-A Empire State: L 0-3. They got one-hit in this poor effort.
L: Delcarmen
Ramiro Pena: 0/4, K
Ray Kruml: 1/4, 2 K (.250)
Brandon Laird: 0/3, 2 K
Colin Curtis: 0/3
Francisco Cervelli: 0/2 BB
Craig Heyer: 4.1 IP, 2 H, BB, 2 K, 0 ER. He was called up from Trenton to provide some innings, and did just that today. Did an excellent job in mop up duty.

Double-A Trenton L 5-3
L: Hall
Abraham Almonte: 1/5, 2B, K (.200)
Ronnier “Musketeer” Mustelier: 2/4, 2B, RBI, K (.500). Picked up right where he left off.
“Boilin” Zoilo Almonte: 0/4, 4 K. The old golden Sombrero for Zoilo.
Rob “R-Ly” Lyerly: 0/3, BB, 3 K,
Melky “Melkman 2″ Mesa: 2/4, 2 RBI. Nice start for him.
Walt Ibarra: 1/4, K (.250)
Shaeffer Hall: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (6.75 ERA). Hall was a victim of a ton of ground ball and infield hits today. Hopefully some of those start landing in the mitts of the Trenton infielders.
Preston Claiborne: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K, 0 ER. Nice start to Double-A for him.

High-A Tampa L 8-5. L: Vidal Nuno

Kelvin “Castrol GTX” Castro: 2/3, R, RBI, BB (.667)
Ramon “Ray-Flo” Flores: 0/1, 2 BB, K. Ray-Flo doing what Ray-Flo does. He walks… a lot.
Rob “Seggy” Segedin: 0/4, K
Kyle “K-Roll” Roller: 1/3, R, RBI, BB (.333)
JR Murphy: 1/3, R, RBI, BB, K (.333)
Nik Turley: 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K (1.8 ERA). Turley was the most impressive player on a bad day for the minor leagues. He will not stay in High-A long if he keeps striking out batters like this.
Manuel Barreda: 1 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB. His offseason velocity spike didn’t help him today.
Kramer “Krame Dog” Sneed: 1 IP, 2 H, K, 0 ER.
