Nova: I’m the best pitcher in the world

When Ivan Nova was a prospect coming up through the Yankees system, he was never highly touted. A lot of that was due to his not so spectacular stats through the minors and his lack of a plus pitch. However, he was always praised by scouts who loved the poise he showed out on the mound.

Perhaps that is because he thinks he’s the best pitcher in the world.

“If you ask me, who is the best pitcher in the world, I say me,” Nova told Chad Jennings of the Journal News. “You have to believe that. That’s why you win so many games.”

Nova has been indeed winning a ton of games. He was sent down to the minors in July last season and since he has been recalled he has been a winning machine. Nova is now a perfect 11-0 in 14 games since being recalled last July 30th with a 3.30 ERA, a 6.5 K/9 and a 2.1 BB/9 in 92.2 innings.

As a comparrison, CC Sabathia has a 5-3 record with a 4.40 ERA over the same span. Although The Big Man seems to be getting unlucky as he has maintained a strong 9.8 K/9 and a 2.3 BB/9 over that same period. Still, with Nova performing at a much more consistent pace during that time it isn’t hard to see why he considers himself so good.

If positive mental reinforcement is working for the kid….AGREE with him!! hahaha

He surely is pitching like the ace of the this staff right now and as the season unfolds, I think he becomes the clear #2 to CC.

I love this guy, he's perfect for the Yankees.

I see the Yankees almost having to make a trade in the near future….possibly to upgrade the LF position.

Phelps has made decisions even more difficult (fortunately)….and the Yankees now have CC, Nova, Kuroda, Hughes, Garcia, Phelps, Andy and Pineda fighting for 5 spots! (The way DJ Mitchell is dealing in AAA, you can almost add him into that mix too)

    • Mike Sommer says:

Pineda may be out a while. 15 pitch outing today and shut down. Doctor on Monday.

    • Greg Corcoran says:

You can add him to the mix, and before the season is over people will be talking about Adam Warren too. Banuelos and Betances are both struggling out of the gate this year unfortunately, but we have so much depth it really doesn't matter.

I actually don't think any trades will be necessary to clear up space for prospects though. I think I'll do an article on why I think that at some point, but the major theme will be that we do have space for everyone down there.
