When Andy Pettitte announced he was coming back this season, he said that his arm was actually in pretty good shape having already thrown six or seven bullpens. However, he warned that he still needed to take it slow because he needed to get his legs underneath him.
A few weeks later and his legs are Pettitte’s biggest concern.
“They are not in shape,” Pettitte told George King of the NY Post on Saturday. “I don’t know how I will continue to progress. … Normally you hit a point where you kind of go, but … I could definitely tell that I wouldn’t have had many more pitches and being strong where I want to get them.”
The Yankees and Pettitte were initially hoping to get him into a game before the Grape Fruit League ended, but after trying to get him into Wednesday’s game against the Mets it now appears unlikely to happen. There is still a full month to go before his targeted return though so there is no reason to think this is a setback.
