Things must have been too quiet for Alex Rodriguez this spring because when the Yankees made the trip to Miami’s new ball park yesterday, he held a press conference to talk about it. And boy does it sound like A-Rod loves that there is a new stadium in Miami.
“This is like, hello Major League Baseball, we’re here,” Rodriguez told reporters. “Jeff Loria and his staff worked very hard with the city of Miami. I’ll tell you, I get chills, I get a little emotional. I’m right down the street and get to share this with my family and friends.”
“I don’t want to be corny or cheesy and I know it’s a spring training game and all that but to me it’s a very special day. I grew up on these streets, in these square blocks. … I never imagined as a child that such a beautiful stadium would be built in the middle of Miami. So I’m very proud of the city of Miami and the Marlins that they’ve been able to achieve this in my hometown.”
A-Rod sounded so emotional about the new stadium that Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com asked him if he wanted to play there.
“Nooooooo! No, no, no,” A-Rod said. “I really, really love living here. I love playing in New York.”
It doesn’t really matter if he wanted to though. Even after this season, A-Rod will still have five years and $114 million left on his contract with another $30 million in potential bonuses. Even in the final year or two of his deal it seems unlikely as he’s probably going to need to DH.
Who knows though, maybe down the road. It certainly sounds like he would give his permission for a deal.
