Weekly game thread: Apr. 6 – Apr. 8

If you are reading this, you probably already know that Bronx Baseball Daily is a great place to get Yankees news, rumors, and analysis. However, most of you probably turn to ESPN, MLB.com, or Yahoo Sports when it comes to getting scores. So this season we are abandoning pre and post-game posts for most games and instead will do a weekly game thread.

After this week, these game threads will be posted each Monday and will preview the games for that week with the pitching matchups and records of each team and then will be updated daily after each game to provide you with scores and a brief analysis. I will provide handy link to this post for reference. Please use this as a place for discussion during games.

Here is what we have for this weekends games:

FriTampa Bay 7, Yankees 6. W: Fernando Rodney (1-0, 0.00), L: Mariano Rivera (0-1, 54.00). HR: Raul Ibanez (1, off James Shields), Evan Longoria (1, off CC Sabathia), Carlos Pena (1, off CC).

CC Sabathia was struggling with his command early on, but that didn’t stop Joe Girardi from intentionally walking the light hitting Sean Rodriguez forcing CC to pitch to Carlos Pena with the bases loaded. After he fell behind in the count, CC gave up a grand slam that put the Yankees down 4-0 in the 1st.

The Yankees got two runs back in the 2nd and an Ibanez 3-run homer gave them a brief 6-4 lead before they gave one back in the botth of the 3rd on Longoria’s homer.

The offense failed to tack on more runs despite having plenty of opportunities to do so and Rivera came in and gave up the game in the 9th after Girardi again called for an intentional walk to pitch to Pena.

SatTampa Bay 8, Yankees 6. W: David Price (1-0, 2.84). L: Hiroki Kuruoda (0-1, 6.35). S: Fernando Rodney (1, 0.00). HR: Nick Swisher (1, off Joel Peralta), Matt Joyce (1, off Hiroki Kuroda).

The Yankees fell behind 2-0 in the 1st inning when a Eduardo Nunez error lead to a couple of runs. Kuroda didn’t help himself out though as he gave up run in the 2nd and 3rd inning to put the Yankees down 4-0.

The Yankees scored a pair in the 4th on RBI-singles from Andruw Jones and Nunez and Kuroda briefly settled in. However, Kuroda gave up two more in the 6th and then Clay Rapada’s ugly Yankees debut led to two more in the 7th as the Yankees buried themselves 8-2.

A 4-run rally started in the 9th inning capped off by a 3-run homer by Swisher, but it was too little too late as the Rays held on to beat the Yankees 8-6 at the Trop.

SunTampa Bay 3, Yankees 0. W: Jeremy Hellickson (1-0, 0.00), L: Phil Hughes (0-1, 3.86), S: Fernando Rodney (2, 0.00), HR: Carlos Pena (2, off Hughes), Jeff Keppinger (1, off Boone Logan).

Hughes started for the Yankees and pitched a solid game despite not being able to get out of the fifth inning. His lone mistake was leaving a fastball up to Pena who crushed it, but the run in the first inning is on Joe Girardi for using Raul Ibanez in the field and Ibanez for being awful defensively.

Like Clay Rapada, Boone Logan cannot get righties out as he showed when he allowed a homer to Keppinger.

The Yankees offense was completely shutdown by Hellickson. The only real opportunity the Yankees had came in the 4th after A-Rod walked and Mark Teixeira hit a double. However, Swisher popped out and Ibanez flied out to deep center and Hellickson escaped the jam.
