It’s beginning to look more and more like the Yankees will take lefty Clay Rapada as the 24th guy on the roster and the 25th player will probably end up coming down to a choice between Adam Warren, David Phelps, and D.J. Mitchell.
The Yankees broke Hector Noesi into the major leagues that way last season and the plan before he was traded was for him to eventually move into the rotation this season. The Yankees will try that path with one of the Warren/Phelps/Mitchell trio, three pitchers who already have nearly a year experience at Triple-A.
“It’s not something that really any of them has every done,” Girardi told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “But one of the theories about breaking in young pitchers is starting them off in the bullpen, kind of like what we did with Noesi last year.
“One of those guys is probably going to get an opportunity to do that. It helps that they’ve been starters in their career and they can give you distance.”
Outfielder Justin Maxwell and jack of all trades Bill Hall also had chances to make the Yankees roster, but that looks unlikely now. Nothing has yet been made official yet, but it appears to be only a matter of time before Girardi announces that the final two roster spots will come out of the bullpen.
