Nova expects to pitch Saturday after ankle sprain

Ivan Nova‘s ankle took a beating in his last start. He took a line drive off it and then later twisted it fielding a ground ball before he left the game suddenly. After the game nobody knew if the injury would cause him to miss a start or even land on the DL. A few days later and things are looking much more positive.

After a bullpen session on Thursday, Nova told reporters that he feels good and expects to play on Saturday.

“It feels good,” Nova told Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger. “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.”

Yankees manager Joe Girardi also confirmed that Nova is going to pitch. “Our plans have been for him to start,” he said.

This is good news because the Yankees won’t have to turn to David Phelps to make an emergency starter so the bullpen won’t be depleted. Nova has also been struggling quite a bit lately and the best thing for him to do would be to stay on the mound consistently.
