Weekly game thread: May 21 – May 27

A very rough week for the Yankees last week as they didn’t win a single series and went 2-5 for the week. Andy Pettitte was lights out, but just about everyone else struggled in the rotation. The lineup continues its struggles with consistency.

Here are this week’s matchups and WPA charts. Check back for updates.

MONKansas City 6, Yankees 0. W: Felipe Paulino (2-1, 1.42), L: Hiroki Kuroda (3-6, 4.56). HR: Mike Moustakas (7 off Kuroda), Jeff Francoeur (2, off Freddy Garcia).

The Yankees offensive struggles continued as they loaded up the bases in the 3rd inning with no outs and the 3-4-5 hitters coming up and failed to score a run. They wouldn’t score any other runs the rest of the game either as Kuroda was lucky to escape having only given up three runs. Clay Rapada allowed another run and Freddy Garcia, Freddy Garcia’d.

TUEYankees 3, Royals 2. W: Phil Hughes (4-5, 4.94), L: Luke Hochevar (3-5, 5.51), S: Rafael Soriano (3, 2.35). HR: Robinson Cano (5, off Hochevar), Jeff Francoeur (3, off Hughes).

The Yankees offense struggled yet again, but it was refreshing to see the pitching staff steal a win. Hughes allowed just two runs on six hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts in six innings. Five pitchers combined to get the final nine outs.

WEDYankees 8, Royals 3. W: Andy Pettitte (2-1, 2.53), L: Will Smith (0-1, 13.50). HR: Curtis Granderson (14, off Smith), Alex Rodriguez 2 (7, off Smith x 2), Brett Butler (9, off Pettitte), Mitch Maier (2, off Pettitte).

Great night for the Yankees as they win their first series in the last four behind a vintage performance by Pettitte and a two homer night by A-Rod.

Pettitte’s line: 7 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 2 HR, 98 pitches, 71 strikes. He’s amazing and his ERA is down to 2.53 after just three starts. David Phelps pitched the final two innings. The offense made sure it was an easy night. Granderson and A-Rod both homered in the 1st, another A-Rod shot in the 3rd, topped off by a three run 5th that made it 8-2.

A nice, easy win, and a series win. This hasn’t happened often lately with these Yankees. A big highlight, Jeter, Granderson, Teixeira, and A-Rod got on a combined 11 times. Too bad Robbie didn’t join them with an 0-for-4 night.
