1st place Yankees win 10 in a row

Yankees started the season slowly. The rotation was a mess and the offense was sputtering. Fans or news organizations with a football-type mentality freaked out. Panic, they said while igoring the call from cooler heads that there was a lot of bad luck going on.

It’s not even the All-Star break yet, but the Yankees have ridden a 10 game winning streak, and 20 wins in their last 24, to grab ahold of the top spot in the AL East, the best record in the AL, and their plus-60 run differential is 2nd only behind the Rangers in the game.

The Yankees have done it behind a mix of good offense, tremendous pitching, and some defensive help too.

The offense has been solid, not tremendous though. During their winning streak their slash line is .257/.339/.457 with 35 extra-base hits. For the record the AL averages are .254/.320/.407. Leading the way is Robinson Cano, who has gone .371/.488/.743 with four homers.

The pitching staff has been the biggest difference though. During the streak they have a 1.89 ERA, 91 strikeouts, and 26 walks in 95 innings. CC Sabathia has arguably been the worst starter and even guys like Cody Eppley and Clay Rapada are pitching in.

The defense has been solid too as they have been getting contributions from even their worst defensive players – Raul Ibanez and Derek Jeter – of late. In 10 games they have only one unearned run.
