Trade Rumor: Yankees interested in Cubs’ Matt Garza

If the Yankees make a deal for a starter at this year’s July 31st trade deadline it is likely that Matt Garza of the Cubs will be their top target, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Heyman suggested that the Yankees like Garza over other potentially available starters such as Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum of the Brewers and Ryan Dempster of the Cubs. He identified Wandy Rodriguez as a possible target as well, somebody they seriously considered last deadline.

Garza, 28, will not be a free agent until after the 2013 season. In 10 games this year, he has a 4.10 ERA, an 8.3 K/9, and a 3.0 BB/9. Those numbers are worse than Edwin Jackson‘s numbers, whom the Yankees are also said to have explored the possibility of a trade for. He will earn $9.5 million this season and will get a raise through arbitration for next year.

Why would they need Garza when they traded for the great Pineda?

  2. NYYinATL says:

I like Garza over anyone else mentioned, including E Jax….depending on the price tag.

Lets just hope if they do make a trade its not for a guy who had a serious velocity drop and got hurt and may never be the same.
Wow add the Pineda disaster with the Feliciano debacle. Any GM with half a brain can fleece Cashman. He hasnt exactly been on a roll lately.
Hey whats Javy Vazquez up to these days?
Im shocked Cashman hasnt brought him back yet

I am a yankees fan sayimg this and I disagree with all of you. The yankees have to stop trading and build there minor league system like all the teams that sucked for years and then are doing great now. Nationals, Orioles, and royals. When they won the world series in 09 have their roster was homegrown. Melky, Gardner, Jeter, Posada, Mo, Pettite.
The yankees may suck for years but with all of their young pitchers in the minors( Warren, Mitchell, Phelps, Banuelos, Betances) they have great potential.

Baseball is a business, there's no such thing as JV. The Yankees are filthy rich with their record breaking attendance, the Yes channel, etc. If they have a chance to improve the team midseason, they are going to do it. Their minor league system is probably one of the best in the league as well.
