Yankees put Garcia on bereavement leave

The Yankees placed Freddy Garcia on the bereavement list while he heads back home to Venezuela to attend the death of his grandfather. Taking his place is Ryota Igarashi, who was claimed off waivers a little over a week ago.

Igarashi pitched just one inning for the Blue Jays before the Yankees claimed him. He struckout two and walked two as he allowed four earned runs. In five innings with the Triple-A Empire State Yankees, he had a 3.60 ERA with 11 strikeouts and three walks.

Garcia has struggled this season. In 24.2 innings he has a 7.66 ERA, a 5.8 K/9 and a 2.9 BB/9. Those walk and strikeout rates are identical to his numbers last season. He can miss up to eight day son bereavement leave.
