Brett Gardner to undergo elbow surgery

The Yankees announced that outfielder Brett Gardner, who has been out with a sore elbow since April 17, will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove inflamed tissue after his third setback which will likely end his season.

Gardner suffered a bone bruise making a diving catch in what was thought to be a mild injury at the time. MRI’s revealed no structural damage, but after resting it a month each time Gardner continued to have setbacks.

The Yankees may try to replace Gardner through a trade by the deadline, but have not been overly aggressive in talks. If they do make a deal expect them to look for an outfielder with speed and strong defense.
