One name that keeps popping up connected to the Yankees is veteran infielder Ty Wigginton. According to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, the chances of that actually happening are unlikely though as they are looking for defense at the third base position and don’t believe that Wigginton can hack it.
Sherman also notes that there would be no rush to complete a trade for Wigginton, and other similar third base types, by today’s 4:00 pm deadline either as he would very likely pass through waivers. That would make him eligible to be traded between now and the end of August.
Besides Wigginton’s poor defense at third, he has a negative-66.7 UZR at the position since 2002, he isn’t even much of an upgrade over Jayson Nix anyway. Wigginton is hitting just .198/.320/.395 off lefties compared to Nix’s .273/.310/.491 line against southpaws.
It doesn’t look like this deal is happening either.
