Rumor: Yankees tried to trade for Brendan Ryan

This one is from yesterday, but I wanted to pass it along to give an idea of what Brian Cashman is trying to do for the Yankees at the trade deadline.

According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Seattle Mariners turned down a trade proposal by the Yankees for infielder Brendan Ryan.

Ryan, is a 30-year-old shortstop with experience at second and third bases as well. He’s very light hitting with a career .247/.310/.332 line so the rumors of the Yankees looking for a defensive third baseman appear to be true.

A small part of me wonders if they weren’t trying to trade for Ryan and then turn around and trade Eduardo Nunez, but that’s just me speculating. No reason to think he’s going to be dealt as Cashman, for better or worse, sees him as a potential starting shortstop.
