There were a pair of rumors that surfaced over the weekend, both concerning the Yankees and recently DFA’d outfielder Rick Ankiel, over the weekend. The first, by Jon Heyman saying that the Yankees aren’t interested and the second by Adam Kilgore that they might be interested.
So who is right? It could be both. The major difference that happened between these Tweets was the injury to Nick Swisher.
Swish suffered a strawined left hip flexor over the weekend. It’s nothing major, but he missed at least two games already and could potentially miss more. The Yankees have been decimated by injuries to their outfielders at the Triple-A level at the same time so if Swisher does have to go to the DL that’s where Ankiel could come in. So while the Yankees very well might have had no interest in Ankiel on Friday, they very well might now.
Ankiel could make a decent outfielder off the bench. He’s strong defensively at the corner positions with a terrific arm. He also has some pop in his bat and hits well against righties (.249/.316/.441 in his career). If he’s claimed off waivers the Yankees would be responsible for the remainder of his $1.25 million contract, but maybe the two sides could work out a deal for a B or C level prospect to defer costs.
