While nothing has come close to happening, the Yankees have been constantly monitoring the reliever market for a month now. One of the names out there connected to them in rumors has been Rockies closer Rafael Betancourt.
However, it doesn’t appear that anything will happen on that front as Joel Sherman of the NY Post has reported that the Yankees have not been in contact with them regarding Betancourt. Sherman added that Colorado is doubtful that they will trade him at all.
Betancourt, 37, has quietly become one of the more consistent relievers in baseball over the years. This season he has a 2.92 ERA, a 9.2 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, with a low 37.4 GB%. As a fly ball pitcher he might not be the best fit for the Yankees anyway. With Joba Chamberlain expected back this week a trade for a reliever seems unlikely.
