Weekly game thread: July 2 – 8

The Yankees had a decent week last week in one respect, going 6-2 against the Indians and White Sox, but overall the loss of CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte made it a grim week overall. Now Freddy Garcia and David Phelps will have to step up in their spots against the Rays and Red Sox this week.

Check back here for updates and WPA graphs throughout the week.

Mon: Tampa Bay 4, Yankees 3. W: Mike Moore (5-5, 4.17), L: David Robertson (0-3, 2.53), S: Fernando Rodney (23, 0.98). HR: Carlos Pena (12, off Freddy Garcia), B.J. Upton (6, off Garcia).

The Yankees had a 3-2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th, but David Robertson and Mark Teixeira both contributed to a 2-run bottom of the 7th that gave the Rays a 4-3 victory.

Garcia started and threw 74 pitches in his best start of the season. He gave up just two runs over 5.1 innings before being knocked out by a solo shot by Pena that made it 2-2. Grandy briefly broke that tie before things slipped away from the Yankees.

Boone Logan started the fateful 7th by walking pinch hitter Sean Rodriguez. He got the next hitter before being lifted for D-Rob. D-Rob promptly allowed an RBI-double to Brooks Conrad and then a playable ball that Teixeira typically fields with ease got away from him leading to the Rays fourth run.

Tue: Tampa Bay 7, Yankees 4. W: James Shields (8-5, 4.11), L: Ivan Nova (9-3, 4.05), S: Fernando Rodney (24, 0.96). HR: Dewayne Wise (3, off Shields), Sean Rodriguez (6, off Nova).

Ivan Nova was unlucky, Sean Rodriguez is not good enough to be this good against the Yankees, and Russell Martin sucks. I think that sums up this game.

Martin made one of two errors early in this game that cause Nova to fall behind 5-4 and the five stolen bases he allowed didn’t help the Yankees comeback attempt. The biggest culprit was S-Rod though who put the Rays ahead for good with a 2-run shot in the 4th inning. He has a career 88 OPS+ and that number jumps to 108 in his career against the Yankees.

The Yankees had their chances against Shields, but could not put together the big hit and the Rays bullpen came in and threw two perfect innings to shut them down.

Wed: Yankees 4, Tampa Bay 3. W: Boone Logan (3-0, 3.34), L: Kyle Farnsworth (0-1, 20.25), S: Rafael Soriano (19, 1.72). HR: Mark Teixeira (14, off David Price), Carlos Pena (13, off Logan).

David Phelps and David Price were locked into a pitcher’s duel early on and both pitchers carried no-hitters into the 4th inning.

The Rays finally got the first hit of the game in the 4th when Sean Rodriguez ripped a RBI-single to right to put them up 1-0. Teixeira then tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 7th on a solo shot, but in the bottom of the inning the Rays took a 3-1 lead as Pena homered off Logan.

The Yankees didn’t take long mounting a comeback off Farnsworth who quickly loaded the bases and walked in a run on four consecutive walks. Jake McGee came in with the bases still loaded and gave up a go-ahead 2-RBI double to Robinson Cano.

David Robertson and Soriano nailed down the final two innings for the win. Cody Eppley was the unsung hero of this one though as he pitched a key 1.2 scoreless innings to bridge the gap from Phelps, who was on an 85-pitch limit, to the back end of the bullpen.

Tough game tonight… hate to see the team lose on a botched play by Mark Teixera. That's a tough play on a ball that bounced off first base though. He's entitled.
