Perhaps a response to David Aardsma‘s setback or Cory Wade‘s struggles, but the Yankees have landed righty Chad Qualls from the Phillies for a player to be named later and cash, according to Mark Hale of the NY Post.
Qualls, 33, has a 4.60 ERA, a 5.5 K/9 and a 2.6 BB/9 in 31.1 innings so far this year. Over his career he has a 3.82 ERA, a 7.0 K/9, and a 2.5 BB/9.
In order to clear space on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated infielder Matt Antonelli for assignment. He wasn’t immediately placed on the active roster, but should be before tonight’s game against the Rays.
