Nova headed to the DL but avoids shoulder surgery

Relatively good news for the Yankees today, Ivan Nova went to the doctor and MRI’s showed only inflammation in his rotator cuff, no damage, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News. He will still be placed on the 15-day disabled list and will but shut down for at least five days while he recieves treatment.

For now Nova is only being shutdown five days, but as long as David Phelps pitches well and CC Sabathia, who is set to come off the DL tomorrow, stays healthy then there is no rush. Shoulder injuries can be devastating for pitchers and the Yankees are lucky that it is just inflammation.

It’s possible that Nova doesn’t pitch again this season, especially with the minor league season set to end in a few weeks. It will make it more difficult for him to find a place to rehab.

This likely gives Joba Chamberlain, who was in danger of being demoted to the minors, a stay of execution as Sabathia can take Nova’s spot on the roster.
