Russell Martin catches CC Sabathia and the world doesn’t end

Despite the fact that some people were hoping for controversy to spring up regarding who’s catching CC Sabathia, Russell Martin was back behind the plate for The Big Man last night and the world didn’t come to an end. In fact, CC pitched an amazing game.

“I wanted to make sure he had a good start,” Martin told Brian Heyman of the Journal News after the game. “If he didn’t, I know there would be some stories about it. … Today just proved I can catch CC.”

It certainly was a good start. CC went the distance and really only threw two bad pitches that resulted in home runs. Otherwise he had perfect control and great movement of his stuff. At one point he had retired 10 in a row and at another point 12.

Yankees manager explained after the game that he wanted to have Martin catch CC a few times before the playoffs. Since the Yankees were playing yesterday after an off-day, Girardi said it was a good opportunity.

“After a day off, Russell was fresh, as fresh as he can be in the month of August,” Girardi said. “It just felt like the time to do it.”
