Yankees activate McGehee and send Pena to the minors

A day after the trade that sent Chad Qualls to Pittsburgh for Casey McGehee, the Yankees newest player showed up in the Bronx today and is in the lineup for the first time. In his place they have sent Ramiro Pena back down to Triple-A.

McGehee is wearing No. 45 and is looking clean shaven today.

“It’s just facial hair,” McGehee told Chad Jennings of the Journal News. “It’s not like I was going to win any beauty pageants with or without it. I’m just excited — all joking aside — I’m just excited to be here. I’ll do whatever it takes. Shaving my beard is the least of my concerns.”

Before he left Pittsburgh his teammates teased him about the beard and wanted him to shave it in front of them, but McGehee told reporters he didn’t want to give them the satisfaction.

MeGehee has put up poor overall numbers this year and was likely going to be designated for assignment by the Pirates this week, but he hits lefties very well. He’s hitting .250/.344/.463 against southpaws this year. So he will likely platoon with Eric Chavez at third base. He is playing first base today against the lefty Zach Britton with Mark Teixeira out.
