If you visited the Yankees official Facebook page yesterday it would have informed you that Derek Jeter would miss the rest of the season with sexual reassignment surgery. Obviously that isn’t true. Instead it turns out that their page, along with several other MLB teams, was hacked.
Here is what the entire message read:
“We regret to inform our fans that Derek Jeter will miss the rest of the season with sexual reassignment sugery. He promises to come back stronger than ever in 2013 as Minnie Mantlez.”
The pages of the Cubs, White Sox, Giants, Marlins, Padres, and Nationals were also hacked as well.
Afterward the Yankees issued this apology:
“We apologize for anything inappropriate that appeared on the Yankees’ Facebook page,” the post read. “The Yankees’ Facebook page is controlled by Major League Baseball Advanced Media. They are looking into the false post in cooperation with Facebook.”
You can read what the hacker, Facebook identified it as a single person, wrote on the rest of the league’s pages on Deadspin. If you don’t take these things too seriously then they are pretty funny.
I wonder if Minnie Mantlez will still be giving out gift baskets…
