Yankees sign a pair of Nicaraguan lefties

The Yankees have signed two 16-year-old lefties out of Nicaragua – Corby McCoy and Luis Garcia, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America.

McCoy is the more highly touted of the two. He’s 6-foot-3 and 170-pounds. At such a young age he is very projectable and already throws a 91 mph fastball. He signed for $150K.

Garcia is 6-foot-4 and 185-pounds. His fastball touches just 88 mph, but because both of these guys are still so young it is very reasonable to expect a jump there. He signed for $50K.

The Yankees have just $2.9 million to spend on international free agents like these this season. They do get six exemptions for players who get paid $50K or less and Garcia will likely fall into this category so his salary won’t count toward the $2.9 million cap.
