I’m not just saying that because I’m still bitter about the 2004 ALCS, but Derek Lowe sucks and the Yankees should not be giving him any more important innings (not that last night’s was an important inning).
Lowe showed up in the Bronx and dazzled the Yankees with four very impressive innings against Texas. With talk that he had tinkered with his delivery there was hope that he might have been able to turn his season around. Joe Girardi instantly fell in love. He used him again a few days later in a brief stint against the Red Sox and still he looked good.
After that, and probably because the bullpen has not been so hot lately, he started getting more important innings. Unfortunately 4.1 innings does not make up for a season of crap.
Since then he has a 9.00 ERA and batters have hit .483/.500/.828 off him over five innings. A small sample size, but as he showed last night he really has trouble getting hitters out. Probably a good indication of why the Indians, one of the worst teams in baseball this year, released him.
If the Yankees don’t designate him for assignment to make room for Chris Dickerson on the 40-man roster then they should relegate him to mop up or extreme emergency duty. Just use Adam Warren instead.
