A-Rod and Swisher benched for Game 3

As the Yankees attempt to come back from an 0-2 deficit against Justin Verlander and the Tigers, their manager Joe Girardi has decided to mix up the lineup by benching Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher in favor of Eric Chavez and Brett Gardner.

A-Rod is 4-for-7 with two home runs against Verlander this season, but historically he never had crazy numbers against him. Chavez also did very well against Verlander this season, 6-for-10 with two doubles. Chavez is in a bit of a slump though going 0-for-11 in the playoffs so far. It comes down to the fact that A-Rod has struggled against righties this season while Chavez hit .298 with a .908 OPS against them.

Swisher is clearly letting the pressure get to him. He’s gone just 4-for-26 so far this October before lashing out at fans Sunday night. It might not be so bad, but Swisher is now hitting just .159 with a .553 OPS in 35 playoff games with the Yankees. So the Yankees have decided to go with Gardner despite the fact that he basically hasn’t played this season. At least if he gets on base he can maybe make something happen on the bases and will play excellent defense.

Eduardo Nunez, and not Jayson Nix, is actually getting the start at shortstop tonight. It’ll be Nunez’s first start in the playoffs and his first time playing in the ALCS. He was initially left off the roster, but was added when Derek Jeter broke his ankle.

Here is the entire lineup:

Brett Gardner LF
Ichiro Suzuki RF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Robinson Cano 2B
Raul Ibanez DH
Russell Martin C
Eric Chavez 3B
Curtis Granderson CF
Eduardo Nunez SS

unless he benched Arod because of his "flirting" incident in game 1, I cant find a logical reason why you dont give yourself the best chance to win in a MUST-WIN game.

Good on Girardi– with Gardner, Nunez, Chavez and Ichiro, have the perfect makings for some small ball, keep-'em-off-balance, Sensitive New Age Bunting Yankees…
