Yankees manager Joe Girardi officially announced the Yankees rotation order to start the ALCS against the Tigers. We knew that Andy Pettitte would start Game 1, but Girardi said that Hiroki Kuroda will start Game 2, Phil Hughes will start Game 3, and CC Sabathia to start Game 4.
This is what I expected all along, but there was a chance that David Phelps could have gotten the Game 2 start as this way means that Kuroda will be pitching on short rest, something he has not done in his career.
“This is probably the shortest rest that I’ve ever had in my baseball career,” Kuroda told Andy McCullough of The Star-Ledger. “But at this point in the season, we can’t really be talking about anything but [winning]. So I’m just going to prepare myself to win this game.”
Girardi sounded pretty sure of himself when he said that it would be Hughes in three and CC in four. He explained that he’ll stick with Hughes in Game 3 no matter if the Yankees are up 2-0 or down 0-2. He didn’t announce it, but I expect that Sabathia will start Game 7 on short rest if the series goes that long.
