Yankees lose Pearce to Baltimore, send Thomas to AAA

When the Yankees activated Andy Pettitte and Brett Gardner off the 60-day DL last week they made room for them on the 40-man roster by designated Steve Pearce and Justin Thomas for assignment. 10 days later, Pearce has been claimed off waivers by the Orioles and Thomas cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A.

That works out nicely for the Yankees. It would have been nice to keep Pearce around for insurance, but as long as Mark Teixeira can stay healthy they have no need for him. He also isn’t eligible for the Orioles postseason roster so it’s not like he can comeback and haunt them in October.¬†As for Thomas, he is certainly nothing special, but it’s always good to keep around extra relievers especially when they are lefty.

In 58 games with the Yankees and Orioles this season, Pearce hit .239/.328/.377. Thomas had an 8.22 ERA over 7.2 innings with the Red Sox and Yankees this season.
