The deadline for teams to set their 40-man rosters before the Rule 5 draft came on Tuesday night and the Yankees have added six players to protect them from the draft — lefties Manny Banuelos, Nik Turley, and Francisco Rondon, righties Brett Marshall and Jose Ramirez as well as outfielder Ramon Flores. They also claimed righty Mickey Storey off waivers from the Houston Astros and added him to the 40-man roster.
That puts the 40-man roster at 39 players and considering the Yankees still have quite a few players to add this offseason (like Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, a catcher, a right fielder, and some bench pieces) there will be some additional roster moves coming.
Banuelos, who will miss most of next season after Tommy JohnSurgery, and Michael Pineda, who is still recovering from shoulder surgery that will keep him out until at least June, can both be placed on the 60-day DL as soon as they are eligible to free up some roster spaces.
With the roster 40-man roseter set at 39 players, the Yankees can take one player in the Rule 5 draft, which takes place on the final day of the Winter Meetings. They could place some players on waivers. The two sports where they may want to cut from is lefty specialists, there are five on the 40-man, and catcher, there are four backup types already on the roster.
