Blue Jays claim Eli Whiteside off waivers

The Yankees officially lost a catching option today when the Toronto Blue Jays claimed Eli Whiteside off waivers, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Yankees claimed Eli Whiteside off waivers from the San Francisco Giants about a month ago and recently designated him for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

Being that he was coming from the National League on waivers literally every team, including the Blue Jays, had to pass Whiteside up then so there wasn’t a huge risk that they Yankees would lose him on waivers. But that was before the Blue Jays trade with the Marlins.

The Jays have been rumored to trade a catcher, but Whiteside is their fifth catcher on their 40-man roster so this seems like a move to irk the Yankees now that they are contenders again rather than preparation for a trade.

Whiteside is an all defense no hit catcher. In parts of five major league seasons he hit just .215/.273/.335. He was likely ticketed as the Yankees Triple-A back up catcher behind Austin Romine before the Jays claimed him.
