The rumor yesterday was that free agent outfielder Scott Hairston was choosing between the Yankees and the Mets as he was about to sign his contract for next year. However, according to Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com, the Yankees feel like if it has come down to those two teams that they will be on the outside looking in.
Apparently Hairston will go with the team that offers him more playing time which is obviously the Mets since he would start with them, but come off the bench with the Yankees.
If the Yankees miss out on Hairston they will continue to look for a right handed hitting outfielder to platoon, but there aren’t many attractive options left on the free agent market to it will likely come down to a battle between Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler for the fourth outfielder position.
Hairston hit .286/.317/.550 against lefties last season while Diaz hit just .281/.328/.426 against southpaws since 2010 and Canzler hit .277/.346/.467 in 137 at bats in Triple-A against lefties last season (Canzler hits lefties and righties equally as well, by the way).
Their other option may be free agent Ben Francisco, but he doesn’t hit especially well against lefties which is something the Yankees need.
