Yankees ace CC Sabathia has lost 20 pounds

C+C+Sabathia

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia has been making the rounds this week as he tries to promote himself as a potential cover boy for next year’s MLB: The Show, but it’s a noticeably slimmer Sabathia doing it.

“I’ve lost 20 pounds,” Sabathia told ESPN’s Colin Cowherd during his radio show. “Coming off the elbow surgery, I just wanted to be healthy and stay healthy all year.”

I tuned into ESPN yesterday by chance and saw CC and the difference is extremely noticeable. He’s obviously still a big dude, but the difference is stark. It’s so extreme that I got a question on Twitter from somebody who was worried about his pitching mechanics being altered. I wouldn’t put that much concern on it, it was just 20 and not 50 pounds after all. This can only be a good thing for him as he is just a year removed from knee surgery and losing weight can make a big difference in that problem not popping up again.

CC is also coming off of offseason elbow surgery. It wasn’t Tommy John so he isn’t expected to miss any extended amount of time. In fact, Sabathia said on air that he is about to begin his throwing program on Monday and that he’ll have no problem being ready for the start of the season which is obviously a good sign.

He loses 20-30 pounds every year. Then he gains it back during the season. Maybe this season he could focus on keeping the weight off.

I am concerned whether he's losing muscle. His weight loss is really rapid and such pace might inadvertently mean muscles are lost and he might only gain them back during the mid season where he peaks. Just my 2 cents worth.

  3. When you weigh 300+ pounds losing 20 isn't such a big deal. He's still a fairly big dude, just slightly less big.

That's really good. Anything that keeps our ace healthy is a plus. I think he is increasingly important under the austerity budget.

  5. I'm the same way. I worked out like crazy and never had junk food in the house when he was gone. He came back and so did some juice. But i think this is really healthy practice for my fitness and health.
