Yankees Morning Bits: Youkilis, Damon, Nunez, Mesa, DePaula, and Avelino 7

Kevin-Youkilis

The Yankees lost to the Phillies 4-3 yesterday.

• Kevin Youkilis sits a day or two with what he calls a “cramp,” but the Yankees call oblique strain.

• Brian Cashman said the Yankees have no interest in signing Johnny Damon.

• Eduardo Nunez is not in consideration for the left field job.

• Melky Mesa (Team Dominican Republic) does not plan to skip the WBC despite the fact that he now has an outside chance to make the team.

• RHP Rafael DePaula and SS Abi Avelino were named top Dominican Summer League prospects by Baseball America.

The Yankees have no interest in re-signing Damon? Oh, because his UZR isn't low enough to replace Granderson or his strike outs aren't as high as Granderson's? C'mon Cashman, give us something to work with here.

It might have something to do with the fact that he's 39 and hit just .222/.281/.329 last year. Melky Mesa and Zoilo Almonte are probably capable of that and would provide significantly better defense. I just wish Chris Dickerson was still around.

either Mesa or Almonte could work…i can't see Cashman going after anyone of substance to replace Granderson unless a deal just falls into his lap…unlikely scenario…

I definitely would like to see Granderson replaced internally. Hard to see why Dickerson was let go. And Youkilis is injured, big surprise. Once again the backup 3Ber is as fragile, or more so, than A-Fraud. Why can't Cashman get a guy who can play the role? What's the over/under on # of days until Youkilis goes on the DL? And then what? Nunez at 3B? or Mustelier (didn't he play some 3b?). And the club let Laird go, so who's the internal replacement? I have the feeling we're gonna see a lot of Jayson Nix at 3B this year.

Total agreement with Tanned Tom. Also, I still think Nunez can be taught to play the OFor maybe even 3B since he's supposed to be an infielder. Mesa is foolish for electing to play in the WBC. Teams remember those choices and I can't blame the teams, this is a business and baseball is his job. He should be trying to win a roster spot.
