Yankees release Juan Rivera as roster begins to take shape, plus notes

The Yankees 25-man roster started to really take shape yesterday when Ken Rosenthal broke the news that they have released outfielder/first baseman Juan Rivera.

That seems to indicate that the Yankees will go with Lyle Overbay at their first baseman. Brian Cashman also told Joel Sherman that Brennan Boesch will make the team as well.

I think we can assume that Jayson Nix will make the team with Derek Jeter set to start the season on the DL. With either Chris Stewart or Francisco Cervelli on the bench as well that leaves one spot open probably for Ben Francisco or Melky Mesa if they can’t find a way to add Francisco to the 40-man roster.

Joe Girardi said that Ronnier Mustelier had a chance to make the roster, but with his knee injury and the players they recently brought in, Francisco, Overbay, Boesch and Vernon Wells, Mustelier’s chance disappeared.

Now the only thing the Yankees need to figure out is exactly how their bullpen is going work out. With Phil Hughes and Clay Rapada set to start the season on the DL there are at least two open spots. There have been indications that David Aardsma is no lock to make the roster either so there could potentially be as many as three spots up for grabs in the pen.

It’s hard to say how the back of the pen will shake out, but Vidal Nuno, Cody Eppley, Shawn Kelley, Jim Miller, Josh Spence, and probably the recently claimed Sam Demel all have at least an outside chance of making the roster.

The roster won’t be finalized until Sunday.

• Nuno is this year’s winner of the James P. Dawson award for being the top rookie in camp. David Phelps and Manny Banuelos won it the previous two seasons.

• Unsurprisingly, the Yankees have been having trouble selling tickets this offseason so they will be giving some of the tickets behind the moat away to avoid embarrassment.

• Boone Logan took a comebacker to the hip yesterday, but he said he was fine afterward.

• Hideki Matsui is being put on a stamp in Japan.

The Matsui news might be the best thing to happen this off season. The one real stinker on the 25 man squad will be Boesch, how does a guy who hit .200 make the squad? Leaving Dan Johnson off at least shows the club hasn't completely gone nuts all at once. What I still want to see is a 3 man platoon involving Youkilis at 1B and 3B, and Mustelier getting some time at 3B, Overbay some at 1B.

How is Ronnier Mustelier not on the team? All he did was hit this spring!

  3. Mustelier has a knee injury. He probably wasn't going to make the team anyway though, but spring training stats are meaningless.
