Prospect news: Taylor Garrison promoted to High-A Tampa.
Angelo Gumbs is a couple of weeks from returning to High-A and is playing in Spring Training games. Jose Campos’ injury last season was a bone bruise. Whether it was a bone bruise or a fracture, those who were advocating for Tommy John Surgery last season to “get it over with” should feel pretty silly now. Chase Whitley is 10 days from being activated. Manny Banuelos is on schedule in his rehab. Adonis Garcia is taking BP. Ravel Santana is playing in Extende Spring Training games.
Triple-A Rail Riders: L 2-0 vs Indianapolis. L: Stoneburner (2-2)
Corban Joseph: 0/3 (.257) Mired in a seven for 36 (.194) slump.
David Adams: 1/3, BB, K (.325) Quite the opposite, 12 for his last 25 (.343) with a .394 OBP in his last 10 games.
Ronnier Mustelier: 0/4 (.125) It was postulated that Ben Francisco’s days in the Bronx were numbered when Ronnie returned, but not if he keeps this up.
Zoilo Almonte: 0/1 (.290)
Melky Mesa: 0/3, 3 K (.230) Leads the international league with 52 K. Not looking good for his prospect status, especially at his age.
Graham Stoneburner: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, K, HR (2.86 ERA) Not a bad start from a guy who regressed last season.
Clay Rapada: 1.0 IP, H, 0 ER (0.00 ERA). I do believe he will make our major league bullpen better.
Double-A Trenton: L 3-1 vs. Binghamton. L: Turley
Ramon Flores: 0/4, 2 K (.256)
Jose Pirela: 2/4, 2B (.239)
Tyler Austin: 1/4, R, 2B, K (.259)
JR Murphy: 1/3, RBI, BB (.315)
Kyle Roller: 0/3 (.292)
Neil Medchill: 0/3, 3 K (.280)
Nik Turley: 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 3 BB, 7 K, 2 HR (4.98 ERA)
Shaeffer Hall: 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, K (3.32 ERA)
Aaron Dott: 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K (3.45 ERA)
High-A Tampa: W 8-1 at Fort Myers. W: Greene (3-2) Still no Dan Fiorito in this game. I wonder if he got sent down.
Mason Williams: 2/5, 2 R (.240)
Ben Gamel: 3/4, 4 R, BB, SB (7) (.265) Boy did he need a game like this. Hopefully this gets him out of the 4/31 (.129) slump he was in.
Robert “the Ref” Refsnyder: 3/5, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, K (.405) According to Mark Newman scouts love his hitting (what’s not to like about a .405 average), but he still has to work on his fielding at second. In particular he is having trouble with turning double plays. That’s five straight multi-hit games, and seven in his last 10 games in case you’re counting.
Gary Sanchez: 3/5, 3 RBI, K (.267) Another well needed breakout.
Anderson Feliz: 2/5, 3 RBI, K (.233)
Shane Greene: 8.1 IP, 5 H, ER, 0 BB, 12 K, HR (2.82 ERA) Quickly erasing memories of last season. He’s old for the level, but more importantly he has improved his walk rate drastically since last season. He had roughly a 4.5 BB/9 last season, and this year he’s walked just six in 44 innings.
