Yankees 2013 6th round draft pick: John Murphy

6th Round, 194th Overall: John Murphy, SS, Sacred Heart University, 5-foot-11, 185-pounds, Pick Value: $208,300

Baseball America didn’t have him ranked in their top 500 players and the MLB guys knew very little about him after he was drafted. He is a college senior though which might be the reason why.

If you remember back to last season, the Yankees took a lot of college seniors with their 6-10 picks in the draft. They do this because college seniors have very little leverage in negotiations so the Yankees can sign them to $10K deals and use money on other picks in the draft.

Murphy hit .367/.442/.565 in 58 games this season and stole 29 bases. That and he led Sacred Heart in all major offensive categories. He was just three hits shy of the school record. Not surprisingly, he did well in the Cape Code League last summer as well (the Yankees like guys who do well here).
