Yankees news and notes: Teixeira, Nova, Brignac, Pineda, and more

I’m going on a historical baseball tour of New York City today and have to leave early so I’ll make this quick.

• Ivan Nova did not get demoted yesterday and instead the Yankees are carrying 13 pitchers on the staff. Joe Girardi said he could use him as a spot starter as they are set to play 20 games in 20 days.

• Different people have been reporting different things regarding the Yankees and the WBC’s financial obligation to Mark Teixeira. Brian Cashman told various reporters at the post that the Yankees had to pay his salary and Randy Levin told Bryan Hoch the same. David Waldstein reported the opposite earlier on Tuesday. It’s going to be quite a lot of money, somewhere in the $12-$15 million range.

• Reid Brignac picked free agency over a minor league assignment.

• Yankees top prospect Gary Sanchez was ranked at No. 26 overall in Baseball Prospectus’ mid-season rankings.

• Michael Pineda started at Double-A on Tuesday. He pitched six shutout innings and allowed just two hits and two walks on 77 pitches. He was in the 92-94 mph range and occasionally hit 95 which has become typical for him during his rehab. Check out Mike Ashmore and Josh Norris‘ twitter accounts as they had a ton of updates on Pineda Tuesday night.

• We always knew Mariano Rivera was a great athlete, but he was drafted by the Harlem Globetrotters on Tuesday.
