Ivan Nova named AL Pitcher of the Month

Nova 2

There’s no denying that Ivan Nova has been amazing for the Yankees since coming back from the minors, quietly taking the title of ‘ace’ from  fellow teammate Hiroki Kuroda. Today Nova was named the AL Pitcher of the Month for the month of August, according to Mark Feinsand of the Daily News.

Nova went undefeated in all his starts in August, going 4-0 with a 2.08 ERA in 43.1 IP. With CC Sabathia not pitching well this year and Kuroda having a rough stretch in August, Nova emerged as the Yankees top starter, brightening the Yankees postseason hopes heading into the depths of September.

Nova has made 15 starts for the Yankees, going 8-4 with a 2.88 ERA in 109.1 innings to go with a 8.0 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9. Batters have hit .255/.329/.328 against him.

— Alex Rodriguez was dropped sixth in the batting order today, but Joe Girardi said it was only to split up the left handed hitters in the lineup.

— The Yankees will face a right handed September call-up, Erik Johnson.  In 10 starts for Triple-A Charlotte he went 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA with a 8.9 K/9 and 3.0 BB/9.

— The Yankees will face Jake Peavy, Felix Doubront, John Lackey and Jon Lester in their four game set with the Boston Red Sox this weekend. This is a big series for the Yankees as these four games could set the tone for the Wild Card race going forward.
