What looked to be a promising Yankees / Red Sox series turned into a nightmare for the Yankees as they lost 9-1 and were swept by Boston with only 12 games remaining in the regular season.
Curtis Granderson led off with a walk and went to third on a throwing error by Clay Buchholz. Granderson later scored on a RBI ground out by Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez would later leave the game with a tight left calf. Ichiro Suzuki knocked in a run in the ninth inning, scoring Mark Reynolds who grounded into a force out.
Ivan Nova was feeling the lingering effects of his triceps injury, going four innings, giving up five runs on six hits. The Yankees starters and the bullpen have been absolutely taxed, and the hitters no longer look like the rejuvenated bunch the last time the Yankees were in Boston.
With the off day tomorrow, the Yankees have to think of a game plan. They face the Blue Jays, Giants, Rays and Astros to end the season. The Yankees need to figure out how they’re going to win games against three last place teams (and a team fighting for the Wild Card spot) or else in a week, the Yankees will go home. It’s coming down to the wire, and it’s a time for the Yankees to bend but not break.
