MLBTR predicts Yankees arbitration figures

Brett Gardner 3

Every year MLB Trade Rumor predicts the arbitration numbers for arbitration eligible players in baseball and they have done the same thing this offseason. The method they use to predict arbitration figures is pretty spot on for the most part, and I find it pretty fascinating; I use their website every year to find out how much of an increase the players should see in their paycheck should they be signed.  Here are the numbers they gave for the seven eligible players on the New York Yankees:

David Robertson:
Arbitration Prediction: $5.5 Million
2013 contract: $3.3 Million

Brett Gardner:
Arbitration Prediction: $4 Million
2013 Contract: $3 Million

Ivan Nova:
Arbitration Prediction: $2.8 Million
2013 Contract: $576,000

Shawn Kelley:
Arbitration Prediction: $1.5 Million
2013 Contract: $935,000

Jayson Nix:
Arbitration Prediction: $1.4 Million
2013 Contract: 900,000

Francisco Cervelli:
Arbitration Prediction: $1 Million
2013 Contract: $515,350

Chris Stewart:
Arbitration Prediction: $1 Million
2013 Contract: $515,100

Now, it’s pretty obvious Robertson, Gardner and Nova are locks for the 2014 season. I’d consider Kelley and Nix a ‘maybe’ (although I liked what they both have done in the past with the Yankees). Cervelli and Stewart, I’d be a bit iffy about. I suppose the Yankees could sign both Cervelli and Stewart, then DFA one of them if they get something better for the catching position via free agency. I will say this though–Cervelli and Stewart are not Major League starting catchers. Not enough pop in their bat and both of their fielding kind of makes me want to cringe (although I would take Stewart since he doesn’t throw the ball into CF almost every time someone tries to steal a base).

What the Yankees do arbitration-wise would be interesting to say the least, but of course there will be changes come the 2014 season.
