Trenton Thunder named Minor League ‘Team of the Year’

Trenton Thunder

At least one Yankees affiliate team had a great 2013 season. The Trenton Thunder were named “Team of the Year” following a three week voting period earlier this month. The Minor League “Team of the Year” award is part of the annual “MiLBY” Awards which are presented by each fall.

The Trenton Thunder were the champions of the Eastern League after winning the Eastern League Wild Card during the season. This was their third championship title in the 20 seasons they’ve been in Trenton, all three championships under the management of Tony Franklin.

The Thunder are up for two other “MiLBY” awards. The retirement party for mascot Chase (who sadly passed away a few days after the retirement party) was a nominee for “Promotion of the Year” and the tribute video for Chase was nominated for “Mascot Clip of the Year”.

Congratulations to the Trenton Thunder on a successful 2013 season!

Amazing that Trenton Thunder dominated EL playoffs and yet could not land a single active player on Baeball America's EL Top 20 prospects list (Murphy made it but had long since been promoted out of league). I think there were some young pitchers on that team that got overlooked by BA. Injuries to Heathcott and Austin didn't help either. Not accusing BA of anti-Yankee bias but I think their methodology resulted in overlooking some high-level Yankee talent. Betances at AAA level would be one example. Mitchell, Greene and Turley all could turn out to be valuable pieces too.
