Pettitte, Rivera and Robertson recognized by BBWAA chapter

David Robertson 2

Earlier this morning the Baseball Writers Association of America had their winter meeting where they voted on their local chapter awards. Three Yankees are going to be recognized at the BBWAA awards dinner in January. It’s the same dinner where they award the MVP, the Cy Young and other prestigious awards. Here is the list for the chapter awards.

Toast of the Town: Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte
Good Guy: Dave Robertson
Community Service: Dillon Gee and Bobby Parnell
Long & Meritorious Service: Tim McCarver
You Could Look It Up (recognizing a past, overlooked achievement): 1994 Expos
You Gotta Have Heart: “Boston Strong”
Postseason MVP: David Ortiz

The New York Yankees also released a press statement about the latest drive they’re going to have at Yankee Stadium tomorrow. Give it a read. It’s a beautiful thing to read about the Yankees giving back:

The New York Yankees and the USO today announced that Yankee Stadium’s Great Hall will host approximately 150 volunteers to help assemble approximately 5,000 USO Big Apple Packs for active servicemen and servicewomen on Thursday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m.

Yankees front office employees, service members and veterans will be present to help prepare care packages for those serving in our Armed Forces. Additionally, volunteers from PepsiCo, FedEx, ESPN and Disney will also participate.

On hand to lend support to the cause will be New York Yankees Manager Joe Girardi and former Yankees pitcher and current YES Network broadcaster David Cone, who will help assemble packs with various items, including Yankees memorabilia. The USO will distribute the packs to troops serving in remote units in Afghanistan during this holiday season.

About the USO: The USO (United Service Organizations) lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their families millions of times each year at hundreds of places worldwide. It provides a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases in the U.S. and abroad, top quality entertainment and innovative programs and services. It also provides critical support to those who need it most, including forward-deployed troops, military families, Wounded Warriors and their families and the families of the fallen.
