The St. Louis Cardinals are planning on moving Matt Carpenter to third base. The Yankees are unsure of whether or not they’ll have their third baseman Alex Rodriguez for the 2014 season. It seems the Yankees and the Cardinals might have to make a trade in order to make both teams happy.
According to the New York Daily News, the Yankees and Cardinals are discussing a potential trade that would send 3B David Freese to the Yankees. It’s not clear what the St. Louis Cardinals would want in return but judging by Freese’s down 2013 season and his injury history, the Cardinals might not want a lot.
The Yankees have flirted with trading for Freese before, after almost acquiring him from the San Diego Padres for Kei Igawa in 2007, but at the time George Steinbrenner did not want to eat Igawa’s contract of 4 years and the remaining $16 Million.
Yankees GM Brian Cashman declined to comment on Freese.
