Time to get the ball rolling: GM meetings begin today, Qualifying Offers

Brian Cashman 3

I’m not going to say that the offseason is going to magically heat up with blockbuster trades every five minutes, so I think the right word for this would be to ‘get the ball rolling’. First on the list: the GM Meetings, live from Orlando, Florida. Let’s not confuse the Winter Meetings with the GM Meetings. The GM Meetings strictly talk about rules and protocol with all of the GM’s present in one building. Sure, there are some free agents wandering about but nothing big as in signings are going to happen there.

Another thing happening today: Qualifying Offers, Part 2. Today, players who were offered a Qualifying Offer have until 5 p.m. to accept or decline the deal. Robinson Cano, Hiroki Kuroda and Curtis Granderson are all expected to decline their offer. If any of the three sign with a different team, the Yankees will get a compensation draft pick for the 2014 draft.

Sucks that if Granderson signs with the Mets, Cubs, and White Sox, the Yankees will only get a supplemental round pick because all of their picks are protected. If Kuroda signs with the Dodgers the Yankees will get the 25th pick. Not too shabby. If Cano signs with the Tigers or Texas they will get the 26th or 22nd pick respectively. I hope the last thing doesn't even come close to happening.
